Rock Art
For untold centuries, human beings around the world have made pictures on rocks. The images range from abstract designs to anthropomorphic and animal figures to depictions of mythic beings. Styles vary according to culture, place, and time period and meaning is often obscure. Some pictures are pecked using chisel and hammer stone, others painted with brush, tube, or hand. In the American Southwest, ancient peoples began making rock art thousands of years ago and continued doing so into historic and even relatively recent times.
The pictures shown here, drawn from In the Places of the Spirits, were made in places both easily accessible and remote.
